Statement of Intent

My goal is to share my knowledge of how to raise a Monarch butterfly with others so they can witness the phenomena of metamorphosis themselves. Watching a caterpillar turn into a chrysalis, or observing a butterfly emerge from a chrysalis is an extraordinary experience and for many can be very therapeutic.

All audiences, from preschoolers to nursing home resident’s, will find my presentation engaging, entertaining, and educational.

Very little effort is needed to raise a Monarch, and since they are found in both rural and urban environments, almost anyone who has the desire can raise one. Wild milkweed can be found growing in vacant lots or cultivated in gardens. Cages can be made from recycled household materials and they take up very little space, therefore they can be kept almost anywhere. The entire process, from newly laid egg to emerging butterfly only takes about one month.

I am particularly interested in sharing my knowledge with those who are in need of physical, emotional or spiritual healing. Examples of some of these areas of special interest to me are nursing homes, shelters, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers. Raising a butterfly is a wonderful pastime that can be easily accomplished by someone confined to a bed or wheelchair.
